My leg feels better this morning! And miraculously I am not hung over from last night. (Uh, Jean, I totally meant to email you but then I fell asleep. :/ )

So I just made the MOST DELICIOUS OMELETTE EVER.

Here's how you do it:

Fry some bacon and set the bacon aside. (This is the traditional start of every southern recipe ever.)

Into the bacon fat put chopped up leftover french fries and onion straws (like onion rings, only not rings) from last night's meal.

Fry until crispy!

Add two beaten eggs. Cook. Flip! Sprinkle with cheese and then cook some more.

Consider briefly photographing it for your blog before being so enticed by the omelette that you go NOM NOM NOM instead. With bacon.

The recipes tag on this post is very much in airquotes. "Recipes".

As a follow-up to yesterday's Fest Mod Drinking Game, Rosy suggested adding,

Take two drinks every time a participant doesn't meet the prompt.

I'd also add,

Take two drinks every time someone decides that fandom isn't fun anymore/they've got a "real life" now that's cooler than fandom/they're too busy for fandom/they've got a new SO and so they're dropping out of fandom less than two weeks after assignments have been sent out (you would think that would be rare, but actually, it happened in Snupin Santa both last year and this year).

In other news, Mr. T is a spokesman for World of Warcraft, and they just launched a new in-game item called a "Mohawk Grenade" (official game info with a link to a Mr. T promo commercial here. I have screen caps of my Blood Elf Death Knight meeting the legendary Mohawk and buying the grenades.

Wish you all could see me beaming right now!!! (Or maybe not, it's probably kinda scary...)

For the last 24 hours my nephew has been in Emergency with a serious flare-up of Chrohn's disease. He's managed to control this pretty well for years with diet, and now they're trying to decide whether there's a medical solution, or whether they're going for surgical (surgeon seeing him tomorrow). WTF went wrong? Until this happened he was in tip-top physical shape, despite occasional poor patches (martial arts instructor, and beautiful to look upon – and I'm his aunt).

We have bush fires all over the shop – NSW, Vic, SA, Qld (but not here in the ACT). Specifically, there's a major fire just the other side of the road we take to Mudgee on Tuesday (to attend a concert series every year). Tonight they are expecting two changes of wind direction. I wonder what tomorrow will bring? When I think about that road running through deep isolated bush, I really don't want to meet fire. We're trying to keep on top of the fire incidents advisory.

And it seems fair to say I'm in some kind of self-destructive mode, in that I'm still having terrible trouble writing the fest fics I committed to, this season.

As I ended yesterday, I was preparing for my Epic Campaign to encourage more Snape/Lupin.

By Epic Campaign, I really mean that I decided to comment on every Snape/Lupin I came across, and that anytime I saw anyone offering drabbles or art, I would ask for Snape/Lupin. Now, you have to understand, the RPG was my first attempt at interacting with fandom. I don't think I had even commented on many journals then. So, when I say I started commenting and asking for drabbles/art, this was a big deal for me.

I made myself one ground rule: Don't say anything to anyone that I wouldn't want to hear myself as a creator. That meant not asking when the next chapter of a Work in Progress might be out or asking for a sequel, or commenting to someone else without actually commenting on the fic or art itself. Two years of lurking will at least teach you what not to do. There were times when I worried that some regular Snape/Lupin writers (*cough* McKay, Arion *cough*), were going to think I was a stalker, but I toughed it out in the name of more Snape/Lupin. ^_^

I'd like to think that my enthusiastic squee and encouragement helped inspire more Snape/Lupin in some small way, but I suspect Arion and McKay's April Showers challenge had more to do with it. Actually, what happened during that same month is that I had been thinking of asking to help out at [info - community] lupin_snape for quite a while, too shy and under-confident to act. But the renewed interest in the community and the mods' busy real lives made several other Snape/Lupin fans muse "aloud" in their journals about asking to mod at the community.

And yes, my ego has come far enough along now to admit that I thought I was the best person for the job at the time and that I'd better get on the stick before the others went from musing to asking. I was wrapping up the RPG, and I'd gained some experience managing a group of people with varying desires and needs from the game. I'd made plenty of mistakes, which helped to an extent, although I feel I've made plenty of mistakes at [info - community] lupin_snape, too. I guess I learned that I could make mistakes and only hold on to them quietly, rather than actively beating myself up over them. ~_^

But I had ideas, too, and, again, those two years of lurking showed me which communities thrived and which died out after the initial excitement waned. For just about 5 years, the ship has been running strong, mainly because there are mods obviously on-duty there. People want to know that other people are paying attention. What kind of a "community" runs steadily without a sense of togetherness?

My modding philosophy has been simple: It's Our community, not my community. A community is nothing without its members, and I've tried to run [info - community] lupin_snape as openly and all-inclusive as possible while maintaining that final "say" only because sometimes someone has to make the decision. I can't think of any time I've actually put my foot down, other than to protect the community from spammers, and to this day, I've never banned anyone except known "problem" accounts from back in the Russian Invasion LJ days. Anyone who tells you that they're not welcome at [info - community] lupin_snape is imposing her/his own exile.

I remember one of the people who wanted to mod (long gone from fandom now), talking about how she wanted to take over and then she could demand Marauders-era fic because that was her favourite era, which scared me to the bone. Snarry, even back then, had more than one "basic" community, and I knew the Snape/Lupin ship wasn't big enough to survive with a lot of splinter communities, which is what would have happened if LS (Lupin_Snape from now on) had become Marauders-focused. Eventually, someone unhappy with that focus would have gone and started Snape_Lupin_Adults or something, and the fans would have been scattered. The ship might have never grown.

Hum. I've meandered away from the question. It's because I love LS and its members so very much; I could go on about it all day. So, after being frightened into action, I consulted with a few friends for some final hand-holding and wrote the mods, offering to be the active mod. I was completely surprised when both women responded within the week with easy Yes'es, and my account was given mod status. Surprised, only because I thought it would be harder to convince anyone to take me on. ~_^

My first month was kind of rocky because I'd barely introduced myself when there was a major death in the family. But you know, in case anyone has the wrong impression, the original LS mod, [info - personal] makishef, has always been interested in the community and pairing, she just didn't have time to maintain a hands-on approach to the community. That month, she stepped right up and made sure the monthly challenge was issued and on-track while I was away. The other mod that was on board when I came on has since moved on, but she was always friendly and supportive as well. They're great gals, and I hope no one thinks anything but the best of them. We wouldn't have LS without them.

I was back by June with a new monthly challenge and there's been something new every month or two since then. I think people cross-posting their challenge-inspired works to their journals and other communities helped let people know that LS was an active, interesting place to be, as well as a treasure-trove of great Snape/Lupin content if they were interested in finding more. I think we hit 750 members by the end of the year and 1000 members a little over a year after the April Showers challenge. Somewhere along the line, "Snupin" became the preferred moniker for the pairing, and I stopped trying not to use it about a year after that. ~_^ I still use Snape/Lupin, though, when I go outside the community, if only because now that fandom is waning, new people coming in don't always get the squished nickname phenomenon.

So, that's it. That's how I came to be mod at LS. And while I answered why I shipped Snape and Lupin together before, in my normal fandoming I always point people here when they ask me why I ship Snupin. It's short and to the point, and I couldn't have said it better myself.

I've wanted to do one of these about you from the beginning, but I think I've been putting it off because I'm not sure what I'm going to write. It's not that I don't have anything to say about you, or that I don't have plenty of thoughts and feelings about you. But those thoughts and feelings are complex and multi-layered, and you're complex and multi-layered, and I'm not sure where to start.

Perhaps it's easiest to begin with the music angle, because I knew you as a musician before I knew you as a friend. I've always thought you were a very talented musician with a amazing voice. Over time I came to see the genuine love you have for it -- for the music itself, and the creation of it. I think you're one of those people who makes music because you just can't not make music; it's just an intrinsic part of who and what you are.

I'm grateful that I've had the opportunity to get to know you beyond that, however, because you're one of the most singular and original individuals I've met -- and I've known a lot of unusual folks. There's just no one else out there remotely like you. You're intelligent, diverse, witty, fun, loyal, determined, and about a zillion other adjectives I could list. But listing them is fairly pointless, because a collection of words can't adequately describe the overall sense of you that exists in my head. So, er, I might as well just stop trying and tell you that you're seriously awesome and totally one of the cool kids. ;)

If you don't know what the heck this is all about, the explanation is here.

Lovely afternoon/evening with [info]goddessgoddess, T., and S. (who turned out to be a cute longhaired fellow in a fetching paisley skirt). We went to Clay Pit for lunch (dodging all the burnt orange turnout on our way downtown); it turned out they have a lunch buffet on Saturdays as well as during the week. That turned out pretty well, they had saag paneer, lamb korma, and vegetable pakora. Stuffed!

After that [info]goddessgoddess made her desire for warbat known, so we went to Sarah's. They're always fun to browse; T. got some rose syrup, [info]goddessgoddess got eight warbat, and I caved and got a packet of honeydew shisha and a little vanilla sugar (which was really cheap!). The lady behind the counter was once more super friendly and chatty, joking about how I got [info]goddessgoddess addicted to warbat and how I should eat more. If I hadn't been so massively stuffed I might have snagged a falafel or two, they're so good there!

Went back to T.'s for lazy-afternooning. There was checking of emails, Facebook, and the like, and it was learned that I cannot use a nipple mouse. There was sharing of warbat. There was cozy napping and the watching of TV, some current shows I didn't recognize, and the first three episodes of Coupling; I had forgotten how deeply I love that show. And how awesome Susan was in the beginning before she got all domesticated.

Eventually dinnertime rolled around. Dinner was chosen with remarkable ease, and we went to a Thai place. I had a Thai iced coffee, which I haven't had in years. S. had one too.Tasty, tasty drinks, those. My entree was a pork and noodle dish, peppery without being actually spicy, that I ate maybe a third of. Yay leftovers! There was also a dessert of some sort that I tried a bite of. Very sweet and sticky. After, Planet K was investigated, and another pipe shop, with discussion of further explorations, but I realized that I was dead on my feet and regretfully said my goodnights.

So now I am doing my night-time catching up, getting loved on by Molly, and discussing the awesomeness that is Discworld with [info]waywardoctagon before collapsing into sleep. With a very full belly.

[info] geri_chan asked how I got into Snupin and ended up as a mod for [info - community] lupin_snape.

I think I've sort of told this story in bits and pieces in different places over the years, but to have it all in one place....

Once upon a time, I was a fandom lurker. I'd drifted into HP from XF and after a couple years of lurking, some LJ friends were pimping a new RPG on their journals...over and over again. I started to wonder if I shouldn't give an RPG a try. I wanted to write again and I'd been reading an RPG avidly, so why not try it myself? From my reading experience at my fave RPG and checking out a few others, I was sure putting in an application so late in the casting period would net me a super-minor, low-maintenance character like Hannah Abbott or Stephen Cornfoot (remember him?); a student character not close to the main action. I said I'd take anyone. I received back: Snape.

Severus Snape? Are you kidding me? I don't care about the adult characters?! Arrgh!

But I said I'd take anyone, so I went on a research bender for Severus Snape. O....k. You know, when you bother to look beyond the surface, there's something up with Snape. He's not just the year-long red-herring; he's Albus' right-hand, he's powerful, he sees through Harry and when Voldemort comes back, Albus sent him off to re-join the Death Eaters (this RPG started in the weeks before OotP was released). I came to respect Severus Snape while looking at the facts. I fell in love with him when I started reading the fan fic.

RPGs are all about the shipping, did you know that? (*snicker*) I started to wonder with whom I could possibly ship Snape (even in a longing, unrequited way in the RPG). I ruled out the kids right away (I didn't even know what "cross-gen" was back then, but I don't like unequal relationships), and I realised there were no developed women in HP that were Severus' age either. I'd just had the slash light turned on by Aragorn/Boromir -- surely I could slash Snape! There were at least a few candidates around his age. With those limitations in mind, I hit the Snape FQF archive.

I read several pairings for Snape, but the character that I kept going back to was Remus. I read some great stories in many pairings, don't get me wrong. But much of the Sirius fic was hatesex or I didn't recognize Snape or Sirius in them, and Harry fics bothered me as much as I thought they would. Albus usually involved power games, the Weasleys weren't really in play back then, Kingsley wasn't on the horizon, James was dead, Lucius was a married bad guy and I wanted my Snape to secretly be good, etc.

Severus had real history with Remus. They were the same age, had held the same job, had gone to school together, had darkness tinging their souls. Snape had followed Remus' gang around school, Remus had almost killed him and Snape still made him Wolfsbane. Severus and Harry have history, but it's convoluted and uneven at best. Same with Albus. And Sirius, not so much. In fact, I've always found it hard to believe that Snape/Lupin wasn't a popular ship right off the bat. Maybe it seemed too easy to some people, I don't know.

ANYWAY, the more I explored Snape/Lupin, the more in love with the idea I fell, until Snape/Lupin was all I wanted to read. The problem I had was that there wasn't a whole lot of Snupin out there. After I went through the FQF, I found [info - community] lupin_snape, which, at the time, did not have much activity, and I scoured the journals and archives from there. Once I'd exhausted all the resources I could think of, I knew there was only one thing to do:

Go on an Epic Campaign to encourage more Snape/Lupin.

To Be Continued in the next post. I started this late for a reason....

Finished the pathfinder, both paper and web versions, and submitted 4 hours before deadline. *does happy dance* Only one more major assignment, plus a final exam, for the two LIS classes, if I remember correctly. Will double-check tomorrow. Possibly a minor thing or two as well, not sure.

Also today took SO out to lunch, went to four stores for grocery and other shopping, and made a white-bean-and-greens dish that turned out pretty well (which is good since there's like 3 or 4 more meals' worth!). Watched part of ST:XI during dinner, SO's choice.

Tomorrow: walk Juno (hopefully) and/or do some yard work, work on resume and job apps, cook for the first half of the week, talk to maternal unit, and do some reading for classes.

Other things to do over the next week: start writing holiday letter/cards, make a lot of cranberry bread, possibly bake regular bread, write/edit some fic, work on last big LIS assignment, go to the art museum, cook a lot, clean the house, and do the last course preps for the term. I was really really clever and managed to schedule things so that I don't have any grading of substance to do over Thanksgiving, go me!

My brother ODed again. My mom tried to wake him and couldn't, so she got my nephew R awake and called the paramedics. D, my brother, is back in the hospital again, and again, R is staying with me. I told my brother before that if he did this again, I was going to kill him. Now I have to figure out how.

The paramedics told my mom in front of R that they thought it was another drug overdose, so now R knows about it. He's livid. And yet, after we talked about it, he said he really doesn't want to go back to his mother, either. He asked, "is my dad going to jail?" He's not; not that I don't wish he would. Maybe that would teach him. Not that it ever has, before. But I told R no. The boys both helped me go through D's room for drugs. This time we couldn't find the methadone that my brother said he took. The boys found a marijuana stash, though. They were all keen to watch me flush it down the toilet until they discovered my brother's porn stash *facepalm*.

I'm so angry I can't even form a coherent sentence. I'm signing off.

Either my flex spending account thinks I'm trying to rip them off, or they're trying to rip me off.

Maybe they think no one person can sustain this much injury in a year. It's baffling sometimes, truly.

For those of you outside the States -- health insurance, which I pay for every month, pays 80% of all my doctor bills. I have to pay the other 20%. To make up the difference, my company offers a "flex card" which is a credit card where a fixed amount is taken out of your paycheck pre-taxes and put on the card to pay for medical expenses. You tell them yearly how much money you want on the card, and they take a little each month to make up that amount, even though you get all that money on the card immediately.

Yes. Welcome to the reason we long for socialised medicine.

Anyway, I carry $600 on my flex spending account, which I've been using to pay for medical treatment for a broken leg, chiropractic adjustments, a sinus infection, and various over-the-counter painkillers and band-aids and such.

Every month, now, my flex card kicks a letter out to me saying JUSTIFY YOUR EXPENDITURES, SEND US RECIEPTS. It's not supposed to do this; the only time this is supposed to happen is if it's something hinkey, like you bought a Nintendo on your flex account or something.

Instead, my letter has WHAT ABOUT THIS BILL FROM NORTHWESTERN MEDICAL CENTER printed on the request. What the fuck do they think I'm buying at a MEDICAL CENTER if not MEDICAL TREATMENT? Prostitutes? Can I get those at a hospital? Maybe they think my theraputic massages for the left arm I CAN'T MOVE have a happy ending or something.

Relatedly, I decided to go for a walk today and now I can't put any weight on my left leg. I've had it elevated and I'm applying ice on and off, but if it's still nonfunctional tomorrow it's back to the Immediate Care centre for me tomorrow.

Argh.

Random Television @ 03:54 pm

Anyone see the "remake" of "The Prisoner?" They should have skipped borrowing a few decorations from The Prisoner like the title and The Village and just admitted they were making a not terribly original sci fi movie that had nothing to do with a classic bit of mid-century television. I figured it out early on and was mostly reading a rather dull history book with a clever title, "The Fabulous History of the Dismal Swamp Company."

The REAL Prisoner had charm, menace, paranoia, complexity, and was a statement of its time. I love it. This show was dull and predictable, even with names instead of numbers.

Watched SGU again, mostly because it was on and I like the nerd. I hate the episodes where we go back to earth for some soap opera and sex. This was primarily one of those. I don't know what the producers were thinking but it obviously wasn't "maybe we should make some good sci fi television about people isolated a million light years from earth." "Sanctuary" wasn't a winner either. Yeah, you killed off a primary character. Sure you did. Uh-huh. Pull the other one.

I did enjoy the almost final episode (sob!) of "Monk." The former former former police lieutenant. We knew he couldn't handle being back on the force after all those years on his own. And we knew Natalie would hate her new boss. So it wasn't full of suspense or surprise but just Monk being Monk. And Stottlemeyer being Stottlemeyer.

Lockdown, and Lee finally figures out what LDWS stands for... @ 06:01 pm

Urf. I am in writing lockdown until [info]smutty_claus is done, because *draws hearts around story* but also *stabs it with a fork* a;slkjdfs.

But! Had to reappear for a moment to point out that the first-ever Harry/Scorpius Last Drabble Writer Standing competition at [info]harryscorp100 just started. Yes, I have a soft spot for Harry/Scorpius, although no, I'm not in this competition. Just an interested observer. I only recently figured out a.) what LDWS things are, and b.) how they work, so now I want everyone to do them. :)

So, there are 15 writers in it, and each week they get a prompt, and then they write a drabble (defined here as under 500 words or so, I think or, in any case, not 100 on the dot), send it in, and they are all posted anonymously mid-week. Then readers vote for their favourite, reveals happen on Sunday, and a new weekly round begins, with one less person. Fifteen weeks later, we have a winner. Fun, yes?

Maybe I'm just addicted to reality TV shows wherein voting for favourites occurs? Hm.

Anyway, I point out this week's Week One drabbles because they are all super good. The first prompt was 'Age Disparity,' so all entries have something to do with the age difference. Scorpius is underage in some but not in others, so read the warnings and go with whatever floats your boat. I had a great time over coffee the other day reading through them and trying to decide on a favourite. No, I'm not always in favour of competitive stuff in fandom, and yeah, it sucks that someone has to be eliminated every week, but hopefully all the participants are okay with that and know not to take it personally. Anyway, if it appeals to you, go have a read through over there and vote!

In other news, I just read through a super awesome story for [info]snupin_santa this morning that made me fall in love with Snupin all over again. Swoon!

*runs back to [info]smutty_claus* Hope all your holiday fest stuff is in and you lot are having a relaxing weekend!

November blogging: day 21 @ 03:32 pm

Current Mood: okay

I've spent today trying to balance getting some much-needed rest with getting things done, although admittedly, I'm leaning more to the "getting some rest" side with the justification that I'll feel more capable of getting things done if I'm not exhausted. I'm doing laundry and washing dishes, though, and I'm planning to do a little housework before grading a few papers.

Meanwhile, tomorrow is the deadline for extensions in Snupin Santa, so there's a flood of incoming gifts this weekend. After tomorrow, I have to check the spreadsheet and see who'll be getting poked.

There really should be a drinking game for fandom fest mods. Something like...

Take one drink every time a fest participant asks for an extension.

Take one drink every time a fest participant assures you that they only need a couple of days to finish, but then you don't hear from them for a week.

Take a drink every time a fest participant disappears without warning and isn't updating their journal.

Take two drinks every time a fest participant disappears from the fest without warning but is updating their journal and is blatantly ignoring your emails and comments.

Take a drink every time you email a fest participant to remind them that they've missed the deadline and they tell you, "Oh, I can't do it. Sorry."

Take a drink every time a fest participant turns in their gift with a note reading, "I didn't have time to get it beta-read/my beta was too busy".

Take a drink every time a fest participant turns in their gift with a note reading, "It sucks, but I hope X likes it anyway!" Variation: they manage to slip in a passive insult of X's prompt and/or blame the suckiness of your matching skills for the quality of their gift.

Take a drink every time a fest participant turns in a .jpg with their name in the file name.

Take a drink every time a fest participant asks you a question that is answered in their assignment email (and in the rules post, which you linked to in their assignment email).

Drink the whole damned bottle every time a fest participant threatens to leave fandom forever because of you.
